Caley Thistle goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams is determined to help create Welsh football history.
The former Tranmere Rovers and Stockport County goalkeeper has impressed for Inverness, despite the poor start to the season, without a win in seven competitive outings.
As a youth player with Crewe Alexandra, Fon Williams represented Wales at under-17, under-19 and under-21 level. Although he has yet to win his first senior cap, he has been a regular fixture in the squad since his first call up in February 2009 for a 1-0 friendly defeat against Poland in Portugal.
Under the management of Chris Coleman, Wales have climbed to ninth in the world rankings and are on course to qualify for Euro 2016 with a three-point lead ahead of Belgium in qualifying group with four games left.
Wales have never reached the finals of a European Championship, and have not appeared at a major tournament since the 1958 World Cup finals.
Coleman announces his squad for next month’s double header against Cyprus and Israel tomorrow, and Fon Williams is determined to keep his place.
Fon Williams said: “Hopefully I’ll be in the next squad because these are exciting times for the national team and I’ve been part of it for six years – it’s a massive thing.
“We haven’t achieved anything as a country in football since 1958. So if Wales managed to get to France next summer, to be a part of that would be something fantastic.
“Wayne Hennessey at Crystal Palace is first choice and has been playing really well and then it’s me and Danny Ward at Aberdeen.
“If we can continue what we are doing and progress hopefully in the next few games we can qualify.
“I’m thriving on being here. This gives me a great window of opportunity. I can only see it as a bonus playing for Inverness.”
Fon Williams added: “Wales had a very good team in 1958, with players such as Jack Kelsey, Ivor and Len Allchurch, John and Mel Charles and Cliff Jones. They reached the quarter-finals, losing 1-0 to Brazil and Pele scored.
“If we could achieve anything like that team did it would be marvellous.
“We’re ranked ninth in the world and if we could stay there and keep the momentum going it would be incredible.
“We’re not there yet by any means but we can do it and if we can then cement our progress for the next campaign in the World Cup it would be fantastic for Welsh football.”
