Caley Thistle: Hughes challenges leading scorer to show club he was right

Caley Thistle manager John Hughes has challenged leading scorer Miles Storey to show the club was right not to add another forward during the January transfer window.

Hughes had been keen to bolster his attacking options after Alex Fisher, who joined from Torquay United at the beginning of last month, was ruled out for several weeks with an ankle injury.

That leaves Storey, who has netted nine goals this term, as Caley Jags’ only fit senior forward at present.

While Hughes is not ruling out moving for a free agent, he is content for the Englishman to carry the burden in the meantime.

Hughes said: “If there are any good players available and we can attract them to our club, we’ll do it.

“There was a bit of frustration we never got the forward we were looking at. But I’m quite happy with what we’ve got. That opens the door for one or two others.

“We can change our system but Miles Storey gives us the pace over the top and down the sides and he stretches the game for us.

“We need to keep him injury free and if that’s the case, we’re OK.

“I’ve got players who can be versatile and play in several positions.

“That’s without bringing another one in, and there’s nothing on the scene.”

Inverness are seventh in the Premiership, a point behind sixth-placed Dundee with a game in hand.

Having also reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup, where they will face either Hearts or Hibernian, there is plenty for the Highlanders to play for and Hughes added: “We’re coming to the business end of the season, where we need to start winning games to take us to where we want to go.

“There’s a fine line between success and failure. What we need to do is keep that focus. What we were good at last year was just focusing on the next game.

“To be fair, I think the guys have implemented it.

“We just need to train right, take care of the games and see where it takes us.

“Without tempting fate, if we keep everyone injury-free we give ourselves a chance because we’re a match for most teams in the Premiership.”
