Richie Foran has vowed to make Caley Thistle a club united after his appointment as manager yesterday.
Club captain Foran, pictured below, has been handed a four-year contract to replace John Hughes in charge at Inverness, while also announcing his retirement from playing.
The end of Hughes’ reign was marred by divisions between the club and manager, reflected in a fallout with chairman Kenny Cameron that resulted in Hughes losing his job.
Continued low attendances also indicated apathy from supporters, with Hughes failing to build on the euphoria that followed the Scottish Cup victory.
The Irishman has taken the post exactly a year on from the final success. Foran has a difficult job on his hands and the 35-year-old said: “My target is to further strengthen the unity between supporters, directors, management and players. When we signal that we’re all on the same wavelength, that makes a huge difference.
“I’ve been fortunate as club captain to have an excellent relationship with the supporters and I hope we can all move on with a scenario where everyone is focused on helping the team.”
Midfielder Foran has been with Caley Jags since joining from Southend United in January 2009, making 209 appearances and scoring 45 goals.
The former Motherwell player is keen to retain Hughes’ assistant Brian Rice as his number two, along with first-team coach Scott Kellacher.
Chairman Cameron said Foran’s influence at the club made him a standout candidate to replace Hughes, and he said: “The length of contract demonstrates commitment on both sides.
“The board received and reviewed a high number of applications and Richie quickly became our preferred candidate.
“This was cemented further during several meetings to discuss the role, his approach and view for the future.
“Our decision he is the right man to lead the club was unanimous and we look forward to working closely with him on the next stage of what hasbeen a remarkable journey.
“Richie has been a great asset to the club, both on and off the park, since joining us in 2009. He particularly understands the blend of spirit, values and togetherness that makes the club what it is.
“The influence and passion he exhibited as a player, combined with his clear determination and knowledge will all serve him well when it comes to building on and enhancing the club’s qualities. It was only a matter of time before Richie stepped up into a management role.
“That time has come.”
