Caley Thistle forward Alex Fisher is determined repay Inverness’ loyalty to him after being handed a new deal despite an injury-ravaged start to his career with the club.
Fisher joined in January after his departure from Torquay United but made just three substitute appearances before chipping a bone in his ankle in a Scottish Cup replay against Stirling Albion.
The 26-year-old was given a second chance by previous manager John Hughes, however, signing a six-month extension, with the club holding the option of another year, before Hughes left to be replaced by Richie Foran.
Fisher has scored in pre-season friendlies against Buckie Thistle, Clachnacuddin and Forres Mechanics, and was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Cowdenbeath in the opening match of the Betfred Cup group stage.
The Englishman is out to prove the club was right to show faith in him and he said: “It’s always tricky being out injured and coming to the end of my contract. Credit to Caley Thistle, though, they were really good to me and really loyal.
“I hope to be able to repay that loyalty if I’m selected, with my performances on the pitch.
“It didn’t start off how I’d hoped but that’s the nature of the game sometimes, those things happen. I’m glad that’s behind me.
“Since pre-season started I’ve done every session and I feel strong. I’ve got a six-month deal and we’ll just see what happens in January. Hopefully, I can do what’s needed to renew it.
“Even if I had a longer deal I wouldn’t rest on any laurels. I pride myself on my workrate and I just hope if I can work hard, and a few chances come my way, I can score a few goals.”
Fisher will compete for an attacking berth with fellow Englishman Scott Boden, who was signed from Newport County this summer, and he is relishing the challenge, adding: “It’s been good to get to know Scott. He’s a really nice bloke and he had a good record last season, so it will be nice if we can be a bit of competition for each other and help the team along.
“It’s a really nice unit we’ve got here. The players who come here all have a similar mindset and mentality. The place attracts a similar type of person and we all get on really well.”
