Peterhead captain Simon Ferry is adamant better times are ahead for the Blue Toon after the Buchan team had to settle for a draw against Alloa in League 1.
Jim McInally’s men, who are seventh in the table, were on course for victory when Fiacre Kelleher broke the deadlock in the 67th minute at Balmoor.
However, Kelleher and goalkeeper Graeme Smith failed to deal with a cross less than 10 minutes later allowing Alloa substitute Jordan Kirkpatrick to volley in an equaliser.
Ferry said: “It is very frustrating. We put so much effort into the match and when we went a goal up, we thought we could hold on and get the three points.
“But we seemed to drop deeper and deeper, which was disappointing, and it was another mistake which cost us the win.
“We don’t seem to be getting the breaks just now but if we keep putting the hard work in, I am sure the tide will turn.”
Alloa goalkeeper Neil Parry saved well in the 11th minute to keep outa Scott Ross header while the visitors went close in quick succession through Greig Spence and Jamie Longworth.
But in a scrappy encounter, which produced few clear openings, Kelleher gave the Blue Toon the lead in the 67th minute.
Rory McAllister’s driven free kick from the left was blocked, but the on-loan Celtic youngster pounced on the loose ball to stab home from six yards out.
However, the hosts were unable to hang on, Kelleher leaving a Scott Taggart cross in the 76th minute following a shout from Smith, who dithered and Kirkpatrick volleyed in at the far post.
Kirkpatrick nearly came up with a Wasps winner with five minutes remaining but his 16-yard shot, which spun off Ross, was superbly tipped over the crossbar by Smith, who went some way to atoning for his earlier mistake.
Peterhead remain six points adrift of the play-off zone but Ferry believes bottom club Stenhousemuir’s 5-0 demolition of Airdrie, who had won six in a row, illustrates the topsy-turvy nature of the league.
Ferry continued: “It is so unpredictable. I don’t think any team will run away with it. We are all quite similar and it is just about who turns up on the day or who makes the most mistakes.
“We are not too far away so it is not the worst situation to be in because there is still a lot to play for.”
