“Excellent from the first whistle”… Blue Toon assistant manager praises players after win

Assistant manager Davie Nicholls reckons Peterhead’s win at Bayview proves the side is up for the scrap to beat the drop.

The Blue Toon earned a deserved League 1 win in Methil at the home of an East Fife side chasing a place in the play-offs.

Peterhead need every point they can grab to stave off the threat of automatic relegation and went a long way to doing just that on Saturday by edging out their hosts.

Nicholls was delighted with the application of his side and said: “It was great win, absolutely fantastic.

“The conditions were difficult but we were excellent from the first whistle.

“We concentrated on the game and deserved to win.

“We worked their goalkeeper which we’ve not been doing in a lot of games recently.

“He had some outstanding saves.

“They put us under pressure a bit at the end of the game but that’s always going to happen.

“But we dug in and got the rewards.”

Peterhead raced into the lead when Jamie Redman converted a Jamie Stevenson pass on the 25-minute mark.

But the Fifers weren’t behind for long and Jason Kerr outmuscled the Peterhead defence to meet a Nicki Paterson corner and head past Fraser Hobday.

The home side had the momentum and the third goal of the game was always going to prove crucial given how little there had been between the sides.

And it was Peterhead who grabbed it when Craig Reid headed a Stevenson corner beyond Mark Hurst.

Far from settling with their goal lead, Peterhead went for a third and almost got it through Rory McAllister who was denied by the goalkeeper.

The win gives Peterhead a five-point lead over bottom placed Stenhousemuir with the teams meeting on Saturday.

They are three points away from total safety and have third-bottom Stranraer in their sights.

Nicholls added: “We did really well in the second half and the players have given themselves a chance of catching Stranraer.

“We’ve had a lot of draws so it was important we got the win and can use that momentum next week when we play Stenhousemuir.

“It’s a big end to the season. It hasn’t been a great season but every player is giving their all for the club and that’s all we can ask.”
