The play-offs beckon for Peterhead despite their 2-1 win against Edinburgh City at Balmoor Stadium.
Jim McInally’s side needed to beat Edinburgh and hope Elgin City could win at Montrose.
The Blue Toon did their part thanks to Scott Brown’s last minute winner but it was not enough as Montrose got the point they needed with a 1-1 draw against Elgin at Links Park.
The result means the Gable Endies are League 2 champions, having finished a point ahead of Peterhead, who will now travel to Stirling Albion on Wednesday in the first leg of the play-off semi-final.
Peterhead boss Jim McInally made two changes to the side which won 1-0 at Elgin City last weekend with Russell McLean missing out due to suspension while Aidan McIlduff dropped to the bench.
Jack Leitch and Mason Robertson were the players who came into the starting 11.
With three points separating the second placed Blue Toon and leaders Montrose at kick-off this was a must-win game for McInally’s men and they made a dream start as the took the lead in the third minute.
Edinburgh City provided a helping hand with defender Patrick Scullian knocking Willie Gibson’s corner into his own net from a yard.
Mason Robertson struck the crossbar as the Blue Toon pushed for a second goal but there was no further scoring before the interval.
The Blue Toon continued to push in the second half with Mason Robertson seeing his header cleared off the line and the home side were eventually punished nine minutes from time as the visitors forced an equaliser.
Gareth Rodger got the important goal, firing into the empty net after Blue Toon goalkeeper Greg Fleming failed to deal with a corner.
However, Peterhead found a late winner when Scott Brown scored following a goalmouth scramble, but the win proved to be in vain.
