Peterhead have made two new signings as manager Jim McInally starts to plan for the new season.

The Blue Toon have agreed deals with experienced defender Gary MacKenzie and striker Isaac Layne.

MacKenzie, 34, arrives at Balmoor after leaving St Mirren. He’s also played for Rangers, Dundee, Blackpool, MK Dons, Bradford, Doncaster and Notts County as well as being selected for two Scotland squads.

McInally said: “Gary speaks for himself really in terms of his ability. He’s been in Scotland squads.

“Up until he got injured last season he was having a good season with St Mirren and he was fit for the run-in but then lockdown came.

“He was frustrated with that because it maybe cost him the chance of resigning with St Mirren.

“Hopefully he can help us along a bit with his experience and help our younger defenders, he’s got a big role to play in more ways than one.

“He’s keen to do some defensive coaching as well so we’re quite happy to make that happen for him as well.”

English striker Layne, 25, has played for Alloa, Stirling Albion, Brechin City and Stranraer and joins after netting nine goals for fellow League One side Dumbarton last season.

McInally added: “He’s always been hard work to play against because of his strength and power, he’s got that abundance. I think he’s still improving and I think we saw that last season.

“He had a season with Brechin when they were in the Championship when they didn’t win a game, I thought he had a good season for them and worked hard when he was having to play up front himself.

“He’s used to that and he’s capable of doing that and we’ll look to get players around him to play off him.

“He’s different to strikers we’ve had before and I felt we needed his attributes.”
