Sharp looks to north-east derby testimonial

Graeme Sharp
Graeme Sharp

Peterhead’s Graeme Sharp has enjoyed plenty of highlights during his time at Balmoor but reckons nothing will beat his side’s Scottish League 2 title triumph last season.

The 30-year-old will be honoured with a testimonial match against Buchan rivals Fraserburgh today.

Sharp joined Peterhead from Montrose in 2005 and said: “There have been a few highlights. Playing Rangers at Ibrox 10 years ago in the Scottish Cup was a standout moment and then beating them last year at Ibrox was also very special.

“You never think you are going to win a game at Ibrox in your career so to do that against any Rangers team was good.

“We had been close in the play-offs the season before so to go and win the league last season is always going to be the standout. The other games against Rangers will be fond memories, but winning the league last season was the one I will never forget.”

It may be pre-season but Sharp is expecting nothing other than a keenly contested affair when the sides meet.

He hopes the competitive edge between the sides encourages a decent turnout this afternoon.

He added: “I have played in Peterhead versus Fraserburgh games before and it is usually an interesting game. It is a friendly but they are never too friendly.

“It is a good game to play in. I think it is a shame for both clubs that they are not in the same league any more. I’m sure both supporters and the towns miss it and that was the thinking behind having Fraserburgh as the opposition for the testimonial game.

“I want to give something back to the supporters and give them a match they will be interested in and eager to see.

“Fraserburgh will be out to prove a point against us as we will be going into the game as league champions. It will be a challenge for them and we have to rise to that challenge as well and make sure we do ourselves justice.”
