Peterhead: Jim McInally hopes for boost by getting off the bottom of League One

Jim McInally hopes his Peterhead players can give themselves a psychological boost and get off the foot of League One.

Peterhead have been mired in a struggle at the bottom all season but results going their way today would see them go above second-bottom Clyde.

They took a step in the right direction with a draw against Edinburgh a week ago, despite finishing the game with 10 men.

McInally will continue to reinforce the positives to his players, who can take a big step towards remedying their own fortunes against Montrose.

“That was the frustrating thing about last week – if we’d won that game we’d have been off the bottom,” said the Peterhead boss.

“We’ll take it game by game but our first aim is to catch Clyde. We need to get a bit of consistency into our performances and then results.

“We’ve got a lot of players that have not been playing all season and not been used to losing, so they’ve been coming in with a bit of a fresh mindset.

“From our point of view that helps and hopefully we can get ourselves off the bottom.”

McInally is hopeful of having Florent Hoti available, after he played as a trialist against Edinburgh.

However the former Dundee United midfielder is not on trial, according to McInally, rather he is trying to get his career going again after moves abroad fell through.

“His last game prior to last weekend was against Motherwell for Dundee United,” said McInally. “He said he would last the 90 minutes and he probably would if we didn’t go down to 10 men.

“If we can help him out and he helps us out, that allows Andy McCarthy time to get back as the injury he’s had is one that hasn’t allowed him to do much running. His fitness isn’t where it was.”

Peterhead will be without Andy McDonald, Paul Dixon, Ola Adeyemo, Russell McLean and Hamish Ritchie for the trip to Links Park, while Julien Carré is suspended after his red card against Edinburgh.

“Even though Montrose had a bad performance last week, they don’t usually have two on the spin,” added McInally. “That’s where their consistency has been brilliant over the last few years.

“They’re always games I enjoy and hopefully we can run them close, the way we always go. They’re a good team all over but we need to be aware of their forward players – you’ve got (Michael) Gardyne and (Blair) Lyons out wide then Rory (McAllister) and Matthew Wright through the middle.”
