‘Someone is in for a for a three or four-nil from us’

Ross County's Jay McEveley could return against Partick Thistle.
Ross County's Jay McEveley could return against Partick Thistle.

Ross County defender Jay McEveley is convinced somebody is going to take an almighty hammering when it all clicks for Dingwall team.

The former Blackburn Rovers and Scotland defender admitted to frustration after failing to take full advantage of attacking pressure and momentum against managerless Hearts.

Saturday’s 2-2 draw, salvaged in dramatic fashion by a late Liam Boyce penalty and a spot-kick save from Scott Fox, kept County’s recovery rolling into a fourth match unbeaten.

But McEveley felt County could have taken all three points had they been more ruthless in making the most of their chances.

The 31-year-old Liverpudlian said: “We felt confident and in control of the game at half time and then could have scored another couple.

“But that’s been our problem repeatedly, and it was the same last week, in not putting teams to the sword.

“But to show the character we did to dig in and come back was nice. It’s just a question of us scoring a couple and the floodgates will open and we’ll go on a run.

“It’s coming. We’re creating the chances and once it happens someone is in for a three or four-nil from us.

“Against Hamilton last week and Hearts we could have had three points. But it just shows how tight it is in the league. A few weeks ago we were sitting bottom of the league, but after last week we could have been clear in sixth.

“It’s crazy really. But we’ve just got to keep digging away and, looking at the recent performances we know we’re going in the right direction. Sooner or later everything is going to click together and we’ll show a great performance with three points.”

McEveley showed great opportunism in a crowded penalty area to score County’s opener, adding to the one he netted a fortnight ago away to St Johnstone.

He said: “It’s strange for me – two goals in three – that’s a forward’s rate. But it’s nice to be there, going up for corners and free kicks and one just fell for me. It’s just a shame we couldn’t hold on.

“Andrew Davies and I are trying to cause chaos at set pieces. That’s what happened for the goal.”
