Midfielder Chris Burke’s hopes of an imminent return to action with Ross County have been dashed after suffering a relapse in his recovery from a viral illness.
The former Rangers and Scotland midfielder has not played for the Staggies since turning in a much-lauded performance in the 4-2 victory against St Johnstone on November 19.
Burke played through a kidney complaint that day, but has been sidelined ever since with symptoms sporadically improving and deteriorating, sometimes on a daily basis.
Having return to training over the festive period, the 33-year-old, who arrived as a free agent in September after being released by Nottingham Forest, has now been rested again indefinitely by manager Jim McIntyre.
The County manager said: “Chris has had a bit of a relapse so he is a while away from coming back into consideration. It isn’t something we can put a timescale on. We just have to be patient and let him recover.”
McIntyre has midfielder Michael Gardyne fit again for Saturday’s trip to face Kilmarnock, but midfielder Martin Woods is doubtful with a hamstring problem.
