Ross County manager Owen Coyle promises to do all he can after escaping the sack

Ross County manager Owen Coyle has resigned.
Ross County manager Owen Coyle has resigned.

Ross County manager Owen Coyle has promised to do all he can to guide the Staggies to safety and repay chairman Roy MacGregor for backing him in the January transfer window.

County have slipped six points adrift at the foot of the Premiership after a run of 13 matches without a victory, and make the trip to ninth-placed Dundee tomorrow.

With 13 matches left, County need points in order to avoid becoming further detached at the bottom but Coyle, who made seven signings last month, reckons his new-look squad can escape danger.

He said: “When you’re a manager, you are responsible not only for the team on the pitch, but the community and everything else.

“That’s something you don’t take lightly. There’s a huge responsibility.

“I’ve been at the club before and know what it means to everyone – it isn’t something we take lightly.

“We know we can fix it. We need to do better but we never got the job because this was a team that were champions. It was a team that had lost six out of seven and hadn’t won at home.

“We want to turn it around and do it quickly.

“The chairman loves his club, loves his team. He’s a very fair man and knows exactly what the issues were. I’ve got to say, as a manager, in our relationship his support has been unstinting. That’s why there is always a real sense of balance at this club.

“He has supported us in the transfer window in trying to get the boys in who we think can help the team.

“That’s what we’ll look to do – get them on the field now to play their part and get this club to safety.”

Coyle has called for a strong reaction from his squad, adding: “I hope it is hurting the players. That’s a key element – it has got to matter, got to mean something.

“The players have to have that mentality, that drive, that belief and courage of their convictions.

“We know we have. The great thing about football is when it turns – and it can turn quickly – we’re the ones who can affect that change.”

One player who will not be part of County’s survival push is Dutch defender Kenny van der Weg, who has been released from his contract.

Van der Weg was signed by previous manager Jim McIntyre in summer 2016, and went on to make 59 appearances, the last of which coming in Sunday’s 2-1 loss against Rangers.
