Ross County’s away form had not been good enough this season, so expectations were fairly low going into the visit to Pittodrie.
County’s recent record against Aberdeen had been poor as well – seven losses on the bounce – but those kinds of records are there to be broken.
An away win didn’t seem so likely after Curtis Main finished from a knock-down at a corner kick on 28 minutes. Main’s goal put County in a difficult spot but the vast experience throughout the away side paid off in the end. It didn’t take long for the match to suddenly change.
Teenage Aberdeen midfielder Dean Campbell was already on a yellow card when he illegally attempted to slow down a quick Ross County free-kick near the halfway line.
Iain Vigurs isn’t one to miss a trick – his booting of the free-kick against Campbell was followed by a commiserative pat as the youngster was given his marching orders.
Playing with 10 men for 60 minutes is a tough ask for all teams and County capitalised on that with some exquisite finishing by Billy Mckay at the end of each half.
Mckay’s header was pinpoint, but his run off the shoulder for the sharp-shooting second showed Mckay at his very best.
His fifth goal in four matches gave the Staggies three points on the road for just the second time this season.
