Ross County defender Coll Donaldson insists his side’s fine start to the season counts for nothing unless the Staggies can build on it.
County fell to their first defeat of the campaign, with goals from Peter Pawelett and Nicky Clark helping Dundee United offset Donaldson’s first half opener at Victoria Park on Saturday.
The result followed a sequence from which County had taken seven points from a possible nine and Donaldson was disappointed his side were unable to keep that positive run going.
Donaldson said: “We can’t just keep saying it’s a good start. How long is a good start? We can’t just keep saying we have won our first two games.
“We need to keep building on it. There is no point in winning the first two games and then drawing and getting beat, and letting results slip.
“There will be more lows, and there will be other highs. It’s how we react.
“We have a game next week. We will get in on Monday and work towards next week.
“We have to put it on the backburner and get back to what we have been doing, and what has been working for us.
“That’s what it’s going to take to pick up results in this league.
“No three points are handed to you in this league. We need to be at it every week, so when we come off like that we will get punished. It’s disappointing, we are all gutted as a squad which is a good sign.
“We will look to rectify it next week.”
Donaldson netted a stunning first half opener against his former club on Saturday, with the 25-year-old frustrated by the manner with which the game slipped away from his side.
Donaldson added: “I felt in the first half, at the time we deserved to take the lead.
“We were really disappointed with the goal we conceded just before half-time. We had a few opportunities to clear it but we didn’t ever really deal with it. “The second half came just came out of nowhere really. We have been solid and worked well as a team in the first three games and the first half. Then in the second half we were just a bit disjointed, things weren’t really breaking for us.
“We weren’t looking for each other as well on the ball.
“When it’s going like that we need to find a way of picking up results when we aren’t at our best.”
County play the first of back-to-back away games when they travel to St Mirren next week, with Donaldson adding: “We need to go again. It starts next week away to St Mirren and we are looking forward to that one already.”
