Joe Chalmers has signed for Ayr United on a two-year deal from Ross County.

The midfielder had struggled with injury of late and had not featured in any of County’s opening six Premiership games.

He made 20 appearances for the Staggies after switching from neighbours Caley Thistle a year ago. However, he had not played since a goal-less draw with Hearts in January and manager Stuart Kettlewell has brought in midfield reinforcements in Jordan Tillson, Regan Charles-Cook and Stephen Kelly this year.

The 26-year-old found the net on three occasions for the Dingwall, including on his league debut against Hamilton Accies.

He will face former side Inverness at the Caledonian Stadium on October 24, returning to the ground where he became a regular between 2017 and 2019.

Ayr United manager Mark Kerr was pleased to finally land Chalmers after trying previously to secure his signature.

He said: “I am delighted to get this deal over the line as Joe is someone I have tried to get on more than one occasion. He is a good age and has great experience in the Championship, as well as playing in the Premiership.

“Joe has a great left foot and will be a big asset from set pieces. He is calm and composed on the ball and also adds good height to the team.”

Chalmers, who started his career in Celtic’s youth system and has also played for Motherwell and Falkirk, played 96 times for the Caley Jags and was part of the team that reached the Scottish Cup semi-finals in 2019.
