Ross County forward Craig Curran believes he is still working his way back to full fitness after netting his first goals since December in the Staggies’ 7-0 Betfred Cup victory against Cove Rangers on Saturday.
Curran did not play after January last season after a succession of health problems, which stemmed from a head injury suffered in a 4-0 win against Kilmarnock in August.
The Englishman suffered repeated spells of dizziness and fatigue and frequent headaches in the months that followed but has played in all four of County’s group stage matches, although the Dingwall man failed to qualify for the last 16 of the competition they won last season.
Curran netted twice against Cove on Saturday and, although he feels his condition is improving, the 26-year-old said patience is key in his recovery.
He said: “I’m still progressing. My body is not perfect yet but it’s a lot better than it was. I’m working as hard as I can to try to get back to where I was.
“There are still some tough days for me but they’re getting fewer. I’ve felt good the last couple of days – they’ve been the best since I had my knock. Hopefully, it can stay like that. I’ll see where I am next week.
“It’s the card I’ve been dealt. What happened rocked my body but we all know the position I’m in. The manager and the staff understand where I’m at, they understand that I’m still getting back there. Some days are tough but one thing I do know is I will get back, hopefully sooner rather than later.
“I’ve pushed myself through it all. Some days I’ve been bad but I knew I just needed to get through it.”
Curran was not the only forward to find the path to goal for the Staggies on Saturday, with Alex Schalk also netting twice and Brian Graham scoring a hat-trick.
Former Tranmere Rovers and Carlisle United attacker Curran took pride in his goals and added: “I’ve been waiting a long time for that feeling again. It’s been a tough time but it’s great just to be back out there playing, and scoring especially.”
