Scotland manager Gordon Strachan says he will have no hesitation in handing Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong his first cap.
Armstrong, who was born in Inverness and grew up in Aberdeen, has been in sparkling form for Celtic with three goals in his last four appearances.
Strachan said the 24-year-old will not feature in tomorrow’s friendly against Canada at Easter Road but hinted that he could make his international debut in Sunday’s crucial qualifier against Slovenia.
He said: “Stuart is playing really well.
“We had him in the squad when he was at Dundee United. He went to Celtic and it didn’t go as well as we would have liked.
“He played left side of a three and, while he was in that role, there wasn’t really any clamour for him to play from anywhere.
“He’s moved to the position everyone thought was best for him and has a real personality on the pitch now. The move has worked out amazingly for him.
“The manager moved him but he has had to take that opportunity and he’s grabbed it.
“I would have no qualms putting him in.
“You look at some areas of the team, such as in midfield and out wide, and think, ‘wow, that’s strong’.
“We’ve got James Forrest, Ryan Fraser, Robert Snodgrass, Matt Ritchie and Matt Phillips, so we’re OK in these areas.”
