Robertson: Pain game more acute as skipper

Scotland defender Andy Robertson says defeat hurts more now that he is wearing the captain’s armband.

The Liverpool left back described Friday’s 2-1 home defeat by Russia as one of the most disappointing results of his career.

It has left Steve Clarke’s side six points adrift of second-place Russia ahead of tonight’s meeting with group leaders Belgium in Glasgow.

Robertson said: “I don’t like getting beat regardless but maybe when I wasn’t captain I could get over it a lot quicker. I maybe dwelled on it a bit longer than usual. I dwell on it in my own time.

“It is about puffing your chest out as we are all proud to wear the Scotland jersey.

“We have another big game coming up and we need to forget about Friday night now.”

Robertson was named as Scotland captain ahead of a friendly against Belgium 12 months ago – a match they went on to lose 4-0.

The 25-year-old said it has been a steep learning curve.

He said: “I have learned a lot, both good and bad.

“I probably sat here a year ago today saying what a big honour it was.

“That has not changed.

“I’m delighted to be captain and I hope the lads think I’m doing a good job.

“There are also negatives that come along with that I need to deal with and I think I am getting better at that.

“It is about learning on the job.”

When asked about the negative side of being Scotland captain, Robertson replied: “Sometimes I’m criticised more, rightly or wrongly, because I am the captain.

“It is fine if people criticise me. I would prefer if they didn’t as it means I have put in a good performance.

“But it doesn’t always go your way.”

Despite Friday’s limp display against Russia, Robertson remains optimistic the Scots can kick-start their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a positive result tonight.

He added: “The game still hurts. We were trying so hard to open this group up and get back on level terms with Russia, which was our aim.

“Now to be six points behind them is tough. But we need to go again. We have no other option.

“We can’t change Friday but we can change what happens in this match.”
