Rangers’ appointment of Graeme Murty until the end of the season tells you they don’t really know where they are going as a club.
Rangers were beaten on Saturday by Kilmarnock, but in many ways what is happening on the pitch is being overshadowed by events in the boardroom.
Murty is an unknown character and, in saying that, I mean he doesn’t have the history you expect of a Rangers manager.
As caretaker it has been a bit of a mixed bag. But the appointment shows the board at Ibrox is still uncertain about where they are going.
They’ve had nine weeks and still have nobody appointed on a permanent basis.
Giving Murty the job until the end of the campaign is a hopeful appointment by the Ibrox board.
They are hoping he might get results; are hoping he might have a run in the Scottish Cup and win it.
Rangers are basically saying Murty is good enough for just now and, if he gets results, they might consider him beyond the end of the season.
What they should have been doing is trying to get a manager with the attributes to take them forward and they haven’t done that.
