Turriff athlete Lisa Ferguson is getting over the back injury she sustained towards the end of her recent Florida training trip and is aiming for a Commonwealth Games qualifying performance in this weekend’s East of Scotland championships at Pitreavie tomorrow.
The Gateshead-based Scotland international long jumper attained her first Commonwealth standard of 6.20m at Clermont in Florida four weeks ago but subsequently hurt her back while training in the weights room.
She needs to hit that mark, or further, for a second time if she is to meet the requirements for a place on the national team to compete at Hampden Park in July.
The selection cut-off date is June 8 but Ferguson believes, however, she’s ready to do the business.
She said: “My back is finally starting to feel better and I am regaining confidence to jump without hurting it again.
“I competed at the Loughborough international last weekend and jumped 5.94m but I had just got back from Florida, jet lag seemed to get the better of me and I found it difficult to compete.
“I am going to compete at Pitreavie on Saturday and I really hope to jump my second Commonwealth Games qualifying distance there.”
