Granite City Wanderers captains Leon Wilkie and Jane Cargill are ready for cup final action

History beckons for Granite City Wanderers today as both the men and women’s teams compete for the Scottish Plate.

It is the first time two Aberdeen teams have made it to the finals of the same competition and club president Shiona Brough is proud both the men and women will be competing at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

Brough said: “I am so pleased for both sides. It has been a transitional year for the teams and to have the possibility of silverware at the end of it is very exciting and rewarding for the efforts put in by players and coaches.

“This is also a reflection of the growth in our club especially as both sides will feature a healthy representation of youth players.”

Men’s captain Leon Wilkie is in confident mood ahead of his side’s match against Uddingston.

He said: “We have taken the opportunity to field some youngsters in this competition and they have stepped up to the plate. We have a relaxed attitude while still working hard which so far has produced positive results and we would like that to continue on Saturday.

Uddingston won our league this year and were very unlucky not to gain promotion so it will be a tough ask but nothing worth having comes easy.”

The women side face Edinburgh University 2nds and captain Jane Cargill is confident in her young team.

She said: “Our side has had a massive changeover of players this season and the average age of the squad is now 19.

“It has been a season of patience with the youngsters as they gradually learn the demands of National League hockey.

“This occasion, irrespective of result, is a great reward for all the girls. The young ones have the advantage of youth and of course respect everyone but fear no one so confidence is high.”
