Royal Aberdeen Golf Club last night voted to allow women members in a move that could pave the way for the return of the Scottish Open.
Around 150 members attended the special meeting with 97 per cent voting in favour of updating the club’s membership policy.
The move will strengthen the club’s chances of bringing the Scottish Open back to the Balgownie links, having hosted the event in 2014 when Justin Rose won the title.
The Scottish Open, taking place in Gullane Links this July, is expected to return to the north-east of Scotland next summer.
Cruden Bay was touted as a possible host venue by Martin Gilbert, chief executive of tournament sponsor Aberdeen Standard Investments, but last night’s decision will likely enhance Royal Aberdeen’s chances for the 2019 edition.
The decision will also be welcomed by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club with Royal Aberdeen and Murcar Links hosting this year’s Amateur Championship from June 18-23.
Founded in 1780, Royal Aberdeen is the sixth oldest golf club in the world. The club also hosted the 2011 Walker Cup and the 2005 British Senior Open.
Members of Aberdeen Ladies Golf Club, located near to the Royal Aberdeen clubhouse, also play on the championship course. It is unclear whether last night’s vote could lead to an attempt to unify the two separate clubs.
