Double Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist Neil Fachie is among eight athletes from the north of Scotland among the 92 athletes across 10 sports who to be selected for April’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Para-cyclist Fachie, 33, will race in the men’s tandem events, the sprint and the kilo. Fachie, who won gold at the London Olympics and silver in Rio, is one of three north cyclists named in the squad. He’ll be joined by Neah Evans from Turriff and Kyle Gordon of Alness.
Viorel Etko of Oldmeldrum, who claimed a wrestling bronze in Glasgow, will hope to be among the medals again after having his place in the Scottish team confirmed.
Alford’s Isabella Tolometti, the reigning Scottish uneven bars champion, has been included in the gymnastics squad while Jamie Wong of Aberdeen has been selected for the men’s hockey team.
Claire Brownie, also from Aberdeen, will captain the women’s netball team in Australia and she is excited at the prospect of leading her country after being involved in Glasgow four years ago.
She said: “I am honoured and very excited to be selected for the Commonwealth Games.
“It is an amazing experience to be part of Team Scotland, I absolutely loved it in 2014 and cannot wait to join up with the wider Team Scotland family, get out to the Gold Coast and put all of our hard work into practice.
“We have an amazing squad full of youth and experience, we are delighted with our new Team Scotland playing kit which nods to both our Scottish Thistles presence mixed in with the Team Scotland design, and we are really excited for the opportunity to represent our country in front of the world.”
