Going places: Abi Allan, left, and Kaitlyn Hendry have had a good 2018

Aberdeen kickboxing duo Kaitlyn Hendry and Abi Allan’s hard work is paying off after the duo enjoyed a successful 2018 on national and international duty.

Hazlehead Academy pupil Hendry, 13, took silver at the World Association of Kickboxing Organsiation’s Junior World Championships in Venice last month after competing in both the light contact and points kickboxing categories at under 50kg while 12-year-old Bridge of Don Academy pupil Allan, 12, competed in points kickboxing in the under 47kg section.

The duo, who both secured gold medals in their respective weight divisions at the British Championships in February to qualify for the worlds, were chosen to train with the GB team in the lead-up to the event.

Their additional training came on top of their usual kickboxing training at Endurance Kickboxing Aberdeen where Hendry has been training since the age of four while Allan has been with the club for more than five years.

Club head coach Nick Smith said: “The girls have given their all to training since the start of the year.

“The commitment and dedication shown by them is second to none and they both deserve to be part of the GB team.

“Not only have they given up their summer holidays to focus on their training programmes, they have also had to fit school work around all the competitions and events.

“In the last year, Kaitlyn has achieved an impressive medal haul including three British Championship titles and nine Scottish Championship titles across different disciplines and weight divisions, along with her second place title at the Junior WAKO World Championships this year and the Junior WAKO European Championships last year.

“Abi has achieved a British title, five Scottish titles and several silver medals across divisions and disciplines.

“Both girls regularly compete nationally and internationally and as a coach I am proud of how far they have come.”
