Ullapool long jumper Stephen Mackenzie will represent Great Britain in next month’s European under-20 championships in Sweden.

He clinched selection in dramatic style at the English championships and national trials at Bedford.

The Highland athlete was lying second with a best jump of 7.50 metres going into the final round when he unleashed a PB 7.59 to take the gold medal.

That performance also exceeded the Euro qualifying standard of 7.55 and places the 17 year-old second in the Scottish under-20 all-time best performers list behind James McLachlan’s (Shaftesbury Barnet) who cleared 7.63 at Indianapolis in 2011.

Highgate’s Dom Ogbechie took silver with 7.57 while Giffnock North’s Alessandro Schenini was third with 7.39.

Mackenzie said: “I am really happy to have done it, especially in such a good competition. I started well and had a decent series of jumps although there were issues with my run-up at times, but it came together with the final one.

“I’m sure there is more to come so that Scottish record has to be in my plans.”

There was frustration for George Evans (Inverness Harriers) who finished fourth in the discus and must now face an anxious wait to hear if he will be in Sweden for the European under-23 championships.

The 21 year-old is currently studying for a degree in chemical and petroleum engineering at Kansas University and only travelled back to Britain on Wednesday.

He has a Euro qualifying mark of 59.84 metres but managed only 50.83 at Bedford.

Evans took some consolation by picking up silver in the shot with a throw of 16.64 which is, however, outside the Euro requirements.

Alisha Rees (Banchory Stonehaven AC) also faces a nervous wait ahead of the team selection decisions for the Euro under-23 women’s championships.

The Loughborough student was silver medallist in the 200m, recording 23.55sec behind Kristal Awuah who won in 23.26.

Rees’s time is just outside the qualifying mark of 23.40 but she remains hopeful of securing a place.

If Rees isn’t picked for the individual 200m she seems sure to be given a place in the 4x100m relay squad.

Andrew McFarlane (Ross County) was eighth in the under-20 pole vault, 4.30m.
