David Law was thrilled to land a late sponsor’s invite to the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.
The 23-year-old Aberdonian had been preparing to fly to Slovakia for this week’s Challenge Tour event before being told yesterday morning he had received one of the final places in the field for the Royal Aberdeen event.
England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick, who finished low amateur at last year’s Open championship at Muirfield, and Scotland’s Alastair Forsyth and Scott Henry also received late entries to the Scottish Open.
Law, who won the Scottish boys’ championship at Royal Aberdeen in 2009, is a member of this week’s host course and will be hoping to make full use of that local knowledge this week.
He said: “It was a fantastic feeling when I got told I was in.
“It was a bit of a surprise and it was an invite I wasn’t expecting to get.
“I had expected to be playing the Challenge Tour in Slovakia so this is a bonus and I want to make the most of the opportunity.
“It is not often you get the chance to play in a Scottish Open in your home city so I am really looking forward to it.”
Law heads into this week having won the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre Northern Open last month at neighbouring Murcar Links.
And he reckons the stellar field at Royal Aberdeen this week will be impressed by the Balgownie links.
He added: “I have been out on the course for a practice round and it is in great condition. It is different from what I am used to – with the grandstands up and having the ropes out for the spectators but the course is set up pretty fair and the rough is not too thick.
“I am used to how the wind blows around here so if it does get windy then that shouldn’t bother me.
“No-one wants it to be blowing a gale, but a bit of wind will make it a good test.”
