It has been a summer of pain in Spain but Sergio Garcia knows a victory at the Open this weekend would get his homeland back smiling again.
The Spanish football team’s World Cup defence ended in embarrassment when they were sent out of the competition in the first round, while Rafael Nadal’s Wimbledon hopes ended with a whimper in the fourth round to Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios.
Garcia said: “I don’t know about rescuing the summer, I don’t think I’d go that far. In fairness we have had 15 great years of sport so it was going to happen at some point.
“We can’t really complain too much. The national team have not done too badly over the years and neither has Rafa.
“It would be nice to have a good week though.
“I feel good about my game. The Open can be so tricky because if you are in the wrong side of the draw you can hit the bad weather and it doesn’t matter how you are playing.”
