Inverness City Boxing Club’s Christmas show this Saturday has taken greater significance with up to four North District Championship final showdowns being lined up.

Head coach Laurie Redfern stepped in to answer a plea to host the contests at the Drumossie Hotel after the Championships due to be held in Aberdeen were recently cancelled due to a lack of available doctors.

So, not only will many of Inverness City’s talented young amateurs be stepping into the ring, fans can also lap up the drama of boxers going toe-to-toe for District titles.

A flu bug sweeping through the Glasgow area following the recent Scottish Development Championships in Ravenscraig led to several boxers and coaches from the Central Belt ruling themselves out of the trip north.

There was a real danger as late as Monday the show would have to be cancelled, however hard work behind the scenes has seen many match-ups secured between north competitors.

Redfern, who has produced more than 100 national champions throughout his sparkling coaching career, is relishing the chance to stage such a prime fight night in the Highland capital.

He said: “The show will include five of our own juniors as well as the North District finals, so we’re looking forward to it.

“There was a real concern we’d have to cancel because of the scale of the flu outbreak in and around Glasgow and, for the first time ever, I was stressed about getting a show on because of call-offs.

“However, we’ve now got up to four finals confirmed, which is great.”

Boxers from Granite City, Kingswells and Wellmeadow clubs will be going for title glory in front of Inverness fight fans.

Recently-crowned Scottish Development champions from Inverness City – Jonathan Kamphan, Kian Stewart, Robert Stewart and Alistair Last – will be in action.

Home boxer Lachlan Buick will enter the ring for his first time to gain some live experience against an unconfirmed opponent from Aberdeen.

Tickets for the event are available by contacting Laurie Redfern on 07919 670851.
