Bubba Watson would be the first to admit the Open championship is going to be the toughest major for him to crack.
The world number three has already won the Masters twice and has enjoyed top-five finishes in the US Open and the PGA championship.
His best performance in the Open is, however, a more modest tied 23rd at Royal Lytham and St Annes three years ago.
Watson missed the cut at Royal Liverpool last year and knows he has his work cut out to improve his record at St Andrews this week.
He said: “I wouldn’t say my Open record is a surprise. The Open championship is tough. The ball bounces around a lot and rolls a lot.
“The way I like to move it in heavy winds is pretty difficult, so it is not really the best for me.
“I don’t really play well in the rain because I move the ball so much so it is lucky for me that we don’t play every course like this and I have a chance to perform at a high level somewhere else.
“It is harder for me to hit the straight shots because I don’t see straight shots. It was the same at Chambers Bay, it is not really the same kind of golf.
“I have not done very well, so, hopefully, I can learn it and make putts when I have the chance.”
Despite Watson’s struggles to adapt to the links game, the big-hitting American still enjoys teeing it up this side of the Atlantic.
He said: “I come over here because I love it.
“I practiced here and went to Kingsbarns yesterday. I love this kind of golf as it is a challenge.
“It comes down to making putts and I haven’t really putted well in the wind. But I only missed the cut at St Andrews by one in 2010, so it is not like I’m searching for my game over here.”
