Inverness boxer Gary Cornish will fight England’s Anthony Joshua for the vacant Commonwealth heavyweight title at the O2 arena in London on September 12.
The fight will be the biggest of Cornish’s career, with Joshua the current WBC international heavyweight champion, in addition to the Olympic gold medal he won at the London Games as a super-heavy three years ago.
Cornish, right, has won all of his 21 professional fights, the latest being a fourth-round stoppage of Hungarian Zoltan Csala in May, which earned him the IBO international heavyweight title.
Joshua has won all 13 of his pro fights by knockout. The 25-year-old is no stranger to the O2 arena, with three of his victories coming at the Greenwich venue, most recently inflicting a first stoppage loss on former world title challenger Kevin Johnson, of the United States, in May.
That victory meant Joshua retained the WBC international title, having first won it at the same venue last October by beating Russia’s Denis Bakhtov.
If Cornish triumphs against Joshua, he would then face England’s Dillian Whyte for the vacant British heavyweight title.
