Warm memories inspiring Singh for another crack at Scottish Open title success

Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh is relishing his return to the scene of his greatest triumph.

The 44-year-old defeated Italian Francesco Molinari in a play-off to win the 2012 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart Golf Links.

Singh carded a final round five under par 67 – the best score of the day – to move up 15 spots to the top of the leaderboard.

A birdie at the first extra hole was enough to earn Singh the £470,000 cheque for first place as well as the final place for the following week’s Open championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

Singh said: “When you win on a golf course, you always want to go back and feed off those good memories.

“This will be a really exciting week for me.

“Scotland is the home of golf so to win the Scottish Open is something that will always be close to my heart. It was one of my best wins and that final round would rank as one of the best rounds of my career, especially because of the difficult conditions we played in.

“I had a great start over the first few holes and was four under after six.

“That got me going and the momentum just built from there.

“After that I wasn’t sure if I was going to make the play-off but the golfing gods were on my side and I was fortunate to go on and win the event.”

Singh knows what it takes to come out on top at Castle Stuart.

He has not tasted victory on the European Tour since the 2012 Scottish Open but, after a couple of tough years on tour, the Indian has been encouraged with his start to the 2016 season.

He said: “I have struggled for a few years, but I feel my game is coming around.

“I finished seventh at the True Thailand Classic in March which felt like a real turning point.

“It is just a question of time until everything clicks and it is going to be my week.

“I believe I will get that win that I am looking for and hopefully that can be at Castle Stuart.

“The key around that golf course is distance control and staying patient.

“Hopefully being back at a course where I have won will bring out my best golf.”
