Scottish golfer Jamie McLeary is hoping the mystery of his vanishing golf clubs will not scupper his chances of success at this week’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.
McLeary’s tools of the trade were lost in transit to last week’s French Open at Le Golf National near Paris, and despite the 35-year-old’s best efforts they have still not been found.
Peterhead-born McLeary used a set of old clubs in Paris and despite missing the cut, took encouragement from his performance, with his driving a particular area of improvement.
McLeary hopes the enforced change can prove a blessing in disguise, and he said: “The one thing I’ve been struggling with this year has been my driving.
“I didn’t get my clubs last week, so I went with a different driver and it seemed to be behaving. I’ll probably have it back out this week.
“I still haven’t got my clubs back – I don’t know where they are. They were supposed to have been dropped off already, but I’ve not found them and nobody knows where they are.
“My new driver is actually one I used until last year and it was good last week and again yesterday.”
McLeary has made two Scottish Open appearances, at Loch Lomond in 2004 and Royal Aberdeen in 2014, but missed the cut on both occasions.
Third time lucky this week? McLeary is taking a dip into the unknown this week and added: “It’s the first time I’ve played Castle Stuart, I played the back nine on Sunday and it’s nice and quite generous off the tee.”
