O’Connor is demanding whole new ball game

Aberdeen Grammar head coach Ali O’Connor insists he is still searching for a complete performance from his team as the Rubislaw men hit the road tomorrow to face Stewart’s-Melville in Edinburgh.

Having bemoaned his side’s second-half display in the defeat at Edinburgh Accies two weeks ago, O’Connor was pleased to see Grammar produce a second-half rally at home to beat GHA last weekend.

However, the Grammar coach is looking for con-sistent halves from his team.

He said: “We’re still searching for a real quality 80-minute performance. It’s something we’ve struggled with all season but we’re getting there.

“Robin Cessford had his best game of the season for us last weekend despite playing out of position at number seven. He really stepped up and gave us everything.”

While looking forward to tomorrow’s trip to the capital, the head coach knows this is a game which demands a complete display from his side.

O’Connor said: “Stewart’s-Melville away is a chance to play on a lovely pitch but is always a dangerous game.

“They tend not to start the season well but from the reports we’ve had on them from their recent matches they seem to be coming into form now and it is going to be a huge test for us.

“Two wins back to back don’t come easily in this league and that is where our focus lies.

“If we are to get a result we are going to have to play at a high tempo and move Stewart’s-Melville around.

“In reviewing last week’s performance there were times where we slowed down and were too passive at the breakdown.

“We have to be sharp, go forward with the ball quickly and push them back.”

Rob Ellinson, Jake Gray and Calum Ruxton return for Grammar but Ross Anderson, Andrew Ovenstone and Grant Walker are unavailable for the trip to Inverleith.

O’Connor said: “We’re fortunate the changes will be like for like so the players coming in won’t change the team too drastically from last weekend.”
