A late try kept Aberdeen Grammar on target for a top-four National 1 finish and set up a home tilt at Dundee High this Saturday as the Rubislaw men made it consecutive victories on the road.
Replacement winger Calum Ruxton was the standout of the day, running in the 78th-minute score the winner against Cartha Queen’s Park after fine work from veteran winger Grant Walker.
Grammar head coach Ali O’Connor was pleased with the outcome, which backed up the 12-point win at Musselburgh the previous week.
He said: “We were very patient and once again showed our character in coming back to win the game, although we gave away some soft scores and should never have been behind.
“Scrum half Jake Gray had another great running game, while Ethan Murray made a big impact.
“Nat Coe was in the right places for us in attack and defence and Byrn Perrott keeps knocking over the kicks.’’
Grammar dominated the first half-hour of a wind-affected game, running in tries through lock Ewan Stewart and full back and captain Alex Ratcliffe and, with Perrott kicking the conversions, looked to be on easy street.
Two tries for Calum Siddle for the home side, one of which was converted, changed the complexion of the game before Perrott slotted a penalty in 32 minutes to give the visitors a 17-12 lead at the break.
The Drumbreck men were the more enterprising in the second half, easing in front with a penalty and an unconverted try just before the hour mark.
But, as has become the Grammar way, they never gave up and it was no surprise when they scored, albeit late in the game, to give themselves a fourth win in five starts.
Grammar remain in seventh place but if they beat Dundee on Saturday it would pave the way for a run at the objective of a top-four place.
