Highland head coach Davie Carson says teenage winger Jake Henry’s call-up to the Scotland under-18s squad is proud recognition for both the player and the club.
Henry was last weekend drafted into a 37-man training squad, only days after making his senior debut for Highland in a 78-22 home victory over Perthshire.
Carson is delighted with Henry’s progress and is predicting a bright future for the former Ross Sutherland youngster.
Carson said: “Jake is going really well which is great to see.
“He did very well in a match for the seconds and we gave him a run-out for the firsts against Perthshire.
“He is a very exciting talent, he is very quick with great feet.
“It’s fantastic for the club that he has been recognised from up here, as it has always been difficult.
“In recent years we have had Bruce Flockhart, who was called up to the under-20s squad earlier this year and has now signed a contract with Glasgow Warriors, while the year before that we had Patrick Kelly.
“It’s great for all the kids to see that they can get this chance. It doesn’t happen very often, and you have got to be an exceptional talent to get to that level.”
Highland are scheduled to play their final fixture of 2017 tomorrow when they make the trip to Haddington, however Carson doubts the game will go ahead.
He added: “They said on Tuesday the game would be on but I would be very surprised if it was on. There’s no snow but frost is the issue and I don’t think it’s going to get any better. I notice Edinburgh’s European Challenge Cup match has been moved to Murrayfield because Myreside is frozen.
“Haddington are not doing too well so we want to come back up the road with five points – nothing else will really do.”
