His club is averaging 48 points per game and lead National 3 with a perfect record of eight wins from their eight games, but Gordonians captain Chris McIlroy insists his club will not take Murrayfield Wanderers for granted on Saturday.
The GoGos travel to face a Wanderers side with one win from their opening eight games, but McIlroy believes his side will not be fooled into thinking they have an easy afternoon ahead of them.
He said: “We haven’t played as well as we’ve wanted to in every game, but we’ve come out with eight wins so we can’t complain about too much.
“There’s West of Scotland, who are also unbeaten, and they’ve got 100 points less than us.
“We’ve scored the most, conceded the least and that has put us top of the table, so we’re very happy with the start we’ve made.
“Murrayfield Wanderers are a team we’ve played before and we know how they are going to play.
“They are not doing too well this season, but we have to go there and look to play our game and then adapt to what they do.”
Big weekend looms at the top of National 3
Following the excellent start it should come as no surprise that confidence is high at Countesswells.
But as his club rugby resumes this weekend before another break next week, McIlroy knows it is important his side maintain their momentum.
He said: “We were back at training this week after a week off. We needed that week after eight tough games to start the season, but we’re all ready for the game on Saturday.
“It’s good we’ve got a game this weekend rather than three weeks off to keep us ticking over.”
It’s a big weekend in the division with West of Scotland, who have also won their eight matches so far, taking on third-placed Allan Glen’s.
McIlroy knows it is important his side look after their match, but he will also be following the head-to-head encounter between two of Gordonians’ promotion rivals.
He said: “When we played Allan Glen’s at home they were slow to start with.
“They won promotion last season and they have come on leaps and bounds since we played them to be right up there and we’ll be watching their game at West of Scotland, too, this weekend.
“Looking at December we’ve got Howe of Fife and West of Scotland away back-to-back. We’ve been targeting those games since the start of the season, but for now our focus is on this weekend.”
