Former Aberdeen attacker Robbie Winters is proving age is not a barrier after penning a contract until the end of the season with West of Scotland junior cracks Pollok FC.
The 40-year-old, who spent four years at Pittodrie after joining from rivals Dundee United, and has had spells in England and Scandinavia, recently left Lowland League side East Kilbride FC to re-sign for Tony McInally’s team.
Last season he played for Rossvale Juniors and was an integral part of their West of Scotland League Central District Second Division title side – the club’s first silverware in their short non-league history.
When their season was complete he was released from his contract to join Pollok, and lifted his second silverware of the same season, this time West of Scotland League Super League First Division.
And during pre-season he signed for his hometown team, Kilby, but that was shortlived and he left after three weeks later due to a differences of opinion with manager Billy Ogilvie.
The attacker is showing no signs of slowing down and said: “I’m 40 now and if I can help my team-mates by talking and playing along with them and if they want any extra training then I’m available for them.
“I’m just using my experience and hopefully I’ll score a couple of goals along the way.
“I’m happy here and my brother David is here too and we’re playing good football and hopefully we can pick up some points along the way.
“East Kilbride FC was something I was looking forward to but it didn’t work out but hey, that’s football and you can’t agree with everybody.
“I’m happy where I am just now and I don’t look back with regret and I’m always looking forward to what’s next as this is a big junior team.
Lok manager Tony McInally also praised his latest signing insisting the experienced striker still had a lot to offer on the playing front.
He said: “Robbie is a great professional and he makes others play and that’s the beauty of him and for a guy that has played at the levels he has he’s got a wee nip about him.
“He wants to win stuff and you would think with his age he would be dampening down but he’s not and he just wants to play.”
Robbie may be 40 but he’s still a relative youngster compared to Yokohama FC’s Kazuyoshi Miura, who at 48, signed a new contract and is still banging in the goals in the professional Japanese J. League Division 2.
