Andy Murray’s victory on clay in Munich today was accompanied by a rather unusual fashion garment.
Playing in his first tournament since his marriage to Kim Sear last month Murray decided he could not be parted with his wedding ring and so attached it to his shoelace.
He was pushed all the way by German Phillipp Kohlschreiber but came through to take the win in just over three hours.
It came almost 40 years since the last British tennis player won on clay, when Buster Mottram won on the dirt in Palma.
Murray said after collecting his 32nd career title:
“It was a really tough match, he served very close to the line and I was getting frustrated.
“The rain made things really tough but, as a Scot, I’m used to that.”
