This week we take a look back through the archives at Stonehaven’s outdoor swimming pool – with pictures dating all the way back to 1937.
The open air pool has been one of the highlights of the summer in Aberdeenshire ever since it opened in 1934.
Famed for its moonlight swims and heated seawater, the Olympic sized open air pool opens all through the summer months until the end of September and attracts visitors from all over – with even American diving champion Marion Mansfield visiting in its early years.
Of course, as you’ll see below, the nature of a Scottish summer has meant that some swimming sessions have been hampered by rain and have forced visitors to use umbrellas to shield themselves from the cold showers from the sky.
Despite its popularity, the swimming pool’s future has been under threat at times which led to the foundation of the “Friends of the Pool” group in 1994.
The community group work hard to keep the pool open and viable for the seaside town.
What are your favourite memories of the outdoor pool in Stonehaven? Are you in any pictures below?
