The wreck of a ‘Danskynn schipe’ and royal letters are just come of the rich details of life in the 1530s revealed in an online database today.
Built by the Aberdeen Burgh Records Project, the effort is a collaboration between Aberdeen University and the Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives. It is being funded by the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies.
The project investigates Aberdeen’s ancient UNESCO-recognised council registers, and gives a rich insight into what life was like.
The Dansynn ship was wrecked in bad weather off Cove in October 1530, and skipper Hans John survived and sought help from the then provost of Aberdeen, Gilbert Menzies.
