Picture by Simon Walton. A historic Aberdeen department store will be turned into a restaurant after plans were approved. Aberdeen City Council approved a change of use application to change the city’s former Esslemont and Macintosh department store. The application has been approved despite the local authority stating that they would prefer a retail chain to occupy the building. The decision, was made by council officers rather than councillors and comes five months after the plans were first lodged by developers Castlecall. Miller & Carter Steakhouse confirmed in November they hoped to move into the premises. Esslemont and Macintosh closed in May 2007 when the owners went into administration. 107 jobs were lost, bringing 134 years of trading to an end. The building has been on the Buildings at Risk Register since 2013.
